ST. JAMES SCHOOL

Founded in 1880, St. James is a historic presence in a historic town. Blending together a love of learning with the development of character, the school’s goal is to encourage students to secure the qualifications to stand out and instil the core values to succeed.

THE SCHOOL

St. James aims to provide younger boarders a homely environment and older pupils a supportive environment that bridge the gap between home and university. With the mantra ‘an education lived is richer than an education attended’, the school encourages students to develop skills such as adaptability, creativity, problem solving, team working, metacognition and humanity. These abilities will never become outmoded and so ensure alumni are equipped to continually achieve throughout their lives.

Many boarders become members of local or regional clubs including Grimsby Harriers Athletics Club, Vikings Basketball Club, St James’ Tennis Club, local Youth Orchestra or the North East Lincolnshire Badminton Club. The quality and depth of these clubs regularly outstrips that which can be provided in schools.

LOCATION

Dating from the 9th century, Grimsby is rapidly transforming from an important heritage port town synonymous with the fishing industry into a future-facing centre for renewable energy.

With strong links to the petrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors, the town is now using its developing wind farm industry to attract first-rate science and engineering professionals to the area. Minutes from Cleethorpes Beach, which was recently ranked number two in the best beaches in Britain, the costal location is always popular with students.

Proximity to Hull (City of Culture 2017-2021), York, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester ensure access to incredibly rich and varied UK Cities, with links to the capital an easy train journey away.

Students exceed their potential at St. James, with tests from the University of Durham indicating this means, on average, students achieve more than half a grade higher than their initial assessment baseline predictions on arrival. The individual focus ultimately results in excellent academic results which significantly outperform national averages. Last year saw a 100% Pass rate at GCSE with 50% at 9, 8 or 7 and 10% A* or A A-Levels were similarly impressive 79% A* to C and 46% passes were A* or A levels.

All Sixth Form students participate in a Life Skills programme, which develops those key abilities necessary for university life and are offered the opportunity to complete an extended independent project (EPQ) on a topic beyond the confines of their subject syllabuses.

Recently joining forces with St Martin’s Preparatory School means that ’The Saints’ are now a unified school across two impressive campuses, united in delivering the very best education possible. St Martin’s has consistently ranked in the top ten of the Sunday Times Schools Guide, which recognises the best performing independent schools in the UK. It remains the number one school in the region and achieved ‘Number One Primary School in the UK’ in 2020.
